Weekly Roundup – Mobile Web Edition

Okay, now that I have a Treo smartphone, I figured that it was high time that I join the mobile web revolution. So… As of right now, FiveCentNickel and Raising4Boys are both available in a special mobile-optimized format for those of you that want to read the site on your phone/pda (details).

What do you have to do? Nothing. Both sites should auto-detect smartphones and serve the appropriate pages. I’ve tested things out and they seem to be working well, but it’s always possible that bugs might creep into the system. If you have any problems, please let me know by leaving a comment or dropping me a line via the contact form.

If you have a site of your own, I highly recommend making your content available in this fashion… Surfing a standard webpage can be downright painful on a mobile browser. If you’re wondering how to do it, I’ve outlined the steps for a WordPress-based site here.

Update: Ugh. False start. After testing this out rather thoroughly yesterday, I awoke today to find that it’s serving the full version to my Treo. I suspect that this has something to do with WP-Cache Manager, which caches pages as their created, thereby reducing server load. While I’ve tried to accommodate this, the tweaks that I’ve employed don’t seem to be enough. While the plugin is definitely producing a mobile-compatible version of this site, it’s not consistently delivering it. Stay tuned. I might end up disabling this until I can get it sorted out.

And now… Here’s a quick look at some of the articles that caught my eye over the past week.

NCN is learning about dividends.

JLP loves his new iPAQ, probably about as much as I love my new Treo 755p.

Jim wants to know how you organize your financial documents.

Flexo talked about the difference between stock brokers and financial advisers.

FMF talked about why ETFs are better than mutual funds.

A few weeks ago it was the Indigo Girls, now it’s the California raisins… I think MBH may be off his rocker.

JD talked about how to beat procrastination.

Lazy Man talked about his so-called lazy investment portfolio. It’s very simple, yet reasonably well-rounded.

Jeremy has been running a poll asking whether or not you have a will. We do, and I’ve talked in the past about how our estate plan is structured.

Ben asked if healthy people should pay less for health insurance.

Sun talked about being a better investor.

4M put together a nice roundup of interest rates for high yield savings accounts.

SVB put together a nice list of ways to beat inflation.

Dumb Little Man put together a list of seven ways to steal.

The Good Human has a nice list of ways to save water. Read and obey. You’ll not only save a bunch of money on your utility bills, but you’ll help conserve an important resource at the same time.

Finally, over at Raising4Boys, I finished my series on how to build a desk on the cheap. Part 2 talked about finishing the desktop, and part 3 covered installation of your custom built desk.
