I was grocery shopping at Kroger (KR) the other night when I noticed something interesting (and disappointing) at the bottom of my receipt… It seems that the gas discount for Kroger Plus Card holders is coming to an end on May 6th. If you’re not familiar with their discount program, you get a base discount of $0.03 off per gallon at Kroger Fuel Centers when you scan your Kroger Plus Card, increasing to $0.10/gallon whenever for every $100 that you spend on groceries. While they state that they’ll be replacing this deal with a discount of “up to” $0.15/gallon when you use the Kroger 1-2-3 Rewards MasterCard, I’d be willing to bet that this won’t end up being as good of a deal for Kroger customers. Thus far, I haven’t been able to find any further details — the blurb on the receipt said to check their May 7th circular for details.
Oh, and I should also note that I ended up paying more for a gallon of gas than a gallon of milk that night — if only someone could invent a milk-powered car!

Twice now I’ve shopped at Schnucks turned Kroger stores and THAT WON’T HAPPEN AGAIN! If you use their Kwik Shop Kroger affiliated gas pumps just say the regular 3 cent for anyone with Kroger gas card the pump shows you getting the discount; however, when I checked my bank account I was charged $1 dollar for the transaction…figure the math. What discount did I get NONE; I paid more than gas sign shows without any discount being applied. I thought some error but had not called my bank yet; again, I go buy 20 gals. with 3 cent discount…again bank charged additional $1 in additon to cost of gas…so I ended up both times paying more than the gas shows to everyone before discount? KROGER’S HAS LOST MY BUSINESS…AS SOMEONE ELSE SAID WILL ONLY SHOP SALE ITEMS…IT’S ABSURD THEY ARE GOING TO REQUIRE CHARGE CARD. THINK OF THOSE PEOPLE THAT REALLY CAN’T AFFORD THEM, AND HOWEVER, THEY WILL NO LONGER GET A BREAK FOR SHOPPING KROGER ON THEIR GAS. I’M NOT ONLY PERSON I’VE HEARD SAY THEIR REGULAR WEEKLY AND IN BETWEEN SHOPPING DAYS AT KROGER ARE OVER. DO THEY REALLY CARE?
I will never buy gas at krogers or shop at krogers because of the way they run the new gas program you was able to get 4 fill ups every month now you only get 1 it is almost impossible to get what you have left from the month before if it is less then the current month i will lose 163 points for month of may call 1-866-221-4141 to complain about the new program i will only shop at krogers for coupons sales when i make money i will shop at walmart or meijers
I pass a super wal-mart to shop at krogers for the discount. Do not need another credit card. Thanks krogers but it will be cheaper for me to shop at wal-mart.
I shopped at Krogers for years. My husband and I are self employed. And we travel alot for our job. When i heard that they was stopping the gas discount it maid me sick. I have spent so much money at krogers every week in order to get the .50 cents of. Now that they are stopping it i will have to go somewhere else to shop. Sorry about your luck krogers.
I just filled up at Kroger yesterday 5/20/2010 and I got my discount. Must only be in some areas.
My husband and I do NOT like the new current way your discounting the gas. Please go back to the previous way. This was one way I continued to even shop at Kroger since it’s considerably higher than your competitors. Your prices are still higher than the guy down the street! You really don’t give us much incentive.
Well i will be shopping at wal-mart again, if the 10 cent off gas stops. just when I thought I wou be shopping at krogers for a a lon time again. give something and take it away. oh well wal mart is closer and cheaper.
Be careful. Every time you fill up, whether it’s 2 gallons or 20, they deduct $100 from your purchases. So, if you buy $104 in groceries on July 1 and buy 5 gallons of gas on July 2, they reduce your purchases to $4, so you have to buy another $100 to get the $.15 off. However, I will say that it would be foolish not to use their Mastercard. Use their money, pay it off at the end of the month. You get the fuel discount, tons of rewards and you don’t pay any interest if you pay the full balance at the end of the month. I’ve saved close to a thousand a year.
I was wondering the same thing, so I asked them this morning and the manager just said that they get fuel from different places, but didnt go into detail where those places are or company names. I am thinking of trying to buy gas from those companies that do not import fuel such as BP. Shell, Exxon, Mobil all import their fuel from Saudi. FYI
Any idea where Kroger buys their gas from? Saudi or where?
Kroger gives .10 cents off per gallon up to 32 gallons for ever $100 you spend in groceries per month, so if you spend 100 on June 1st, then you have until the end of July to use the discount of .10 cents off, but also be warned that if you have a phone number tied to your plus card, anyone can use your discount without your knowledge, the program is not being terminated.
I have an accumulated purchases at Kroger for $162, and I get 10 cents discont off a gallon of gas at Kroger, and there is no mention on the bottom of my ticket that it stops at any date. Now I am looking for a Kroger gas station. It does say that I have to purchase the gas by June 3o, 2008.
My name is Leasa and I would like to know how
to get savings on some gas from kroger
Funny. My receipts still say I can redeem earned Fuel Rewards through 5/31. That would indicate the program is not ending. However, there’s the caveat: Certain restrictions apply. But it’s not explained.
The Krogers in Houston still offer the discount with your kroger card.I filled up yesterday 5/21/06.
Tom, is there any chance that the pumps were inaccurate, such that were delivering less gas than they claimed? This would translate into lower MPG if you based your calculations on the pump amounts.
I have noticed a drop in MPG with Kroger fuel. At first I was concerned that my auto was in need of repair because a sure sign of trouble is a drop in MPG. I switched back to Conoco and my mileage improved. I know someone that had the same experience. It doesn’t make sense to me. We live at 5000 feet elevation, I am not sure it is a factor.
I would wager that this is also going to be true at other Kroger-owned grocery chains that have gas stations at some stores, e.g. QFC here in Seattle. If not already, then soon.
Just be glad your car doesn’t burn inkjet printer ink. Filling a 15 gallon tank would cost more than the average house. 🙂
Oh so have to use their credit card? I don’t use credit..with them moving the offer to their credit card instead of shopping card…they will make money off the intrest, instead of giving money away. As an investor in Kroger, that’s a plus, but as a shopper it will be another reason not to shop at the Dillon’s (owned by Kroger) in my town.

I noticed this today too! I went to fill up at my local neighborhood Kroger and the card scanner was taped over. I was owed my .10/gallon from the month before so I just stuck my Kroger card in the credit card slot. It worked, so that was good.
Honestly, I don’t want to have to sign up for a Kroger Mastercard to get my gas discount. This is a big bummer.
