As a followup to yesterday’s post about depositing scanned checks, I wanted to share a tip for depositing checks into your ING Direct account.
Because ING Direct doesn’t yet support the uploading of check images, I’ve typically deposited checks at my local bank and then initiated an ACH transfer. If you’d like to cut out that extra trip to the bank, then read on…
Depositing checks by mail
For starters, endorse the check. Before signing your name, you should write “For Deposit Only into Account {your acct #}” (fill in your real account number). On the memo line, you should also be sure to include your customer number.
Note: For those that are unaware, your customer number isn’t the same as your account number(s). Your customer number is like a username, though you can now create an alphanumeric username. Once logged in, you’ll see the numbers associated with your individual accounts.
If you’re uncomfortable including all of this information on the check, which will likely be returned (either physically or as a digital image) to the check writer, then you should simply write “For Deposit Only” above your signature on the back and enclose a note with your account number.
Either way, it’s a good idea to include your customer number on the check itself so they can track you down if something goes awry.
Once it’s ready, mail your check to:
ING DIRECT
P.O. Box 60
St. Cloud, MN 56302-0060
While it will take a few days to arrive, your check should be posted immediately upon receipt by ING Direct. Yes, you’ll have to pay for a stamp, but you’ll most likely save both gas and time.
I deposited two checks a month later no funds have been made available to me by ing, their response we need to check the funds of issuing bank, meanwhile the check was cashed 27 days ago. Take your money elsewhere. Go online and will see similar horror stories from other custumers. This banks if you can call it that dosent care.
P.s. my security question was also changed without my authorization, come to find out from reading other blogs, this bank is notorious with changing custumers info, that is illegal and they should be shut down.

@Trent yeah Chase sucks because they also started charging minimum balance fees. I closed my account with them after having it open for 5+ years all because they no longer offered FREE checking.
@Nickel thanks for this post sometimes it’s hard to find what your looking for on banking sites.
Excellent info! The bank my ING account is linked to (Chase) started charging a fee for outgoing transfers.
Dear Arvin,
I use use a Charles Schwab Checking account. The mail man took my pre-paid deposit envelope on Saturday. Today (Tuesday after 12) the check was deposited into my account. I’d say 3 business days is pretty typical.
@arvin ING just released their native iphone app:
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ing-direct/id329508084?mt=8
Still no check scanning though.
And should you need to FedEx a cheque to ING, here’s the address:
ING DIRECT
30 7th Ave S.
St. Cloud, MN 56301
Note that FedEx cannot deliver to PO boxes. I’m out of the country and I had to get a cheque into my ING account…
My bank is walking distance and I actually like going there for exercise purposes, so not only do I not save gas, the 41 cent stamp becomes a “convenience” fee.
I was wondering if you could give an example of the length of time between when you mailed a check and when it completely cleared. You don’t have to give any specifics other than date. I’d just like to be able to compare it to the deposit to bank and ACH way.
Regardless, ING would completely own if they instituted check scanning or an iPhone app.
