Wow. I can’t believe that I almost forgot about this, but… Today is FiveCentNickel’s fourth birthday. It’s really hard for me to believe that it’s been four years since I wrote these words:
Welcome to fivecentnickel.com, a new weblog about personal finance written from the perspective of a thirty-something family man.
(I’m still thirty-something, by the way.)
In case you’re not aware of how I came up with the domain name, it comes from the following quote from the Depression-era journalist Franklin P. Adams:
“There are plenty of good five-cent cigars in the country. The trouble is they cost a quarter. What this country needs is a good five-cent nickel.â€
And now we have one. 🙂
For the numbers freaks amongst you (don’t worry, I’m a numbers freak too), I present the following data:
Total number of posts: 1900
Total number of words in posts: 486, 749 (and not a single typo – hah!)
Total number of comments: 17, 263 (not counting spam)
Total number of words in comments: 1, 390, 062
Breaking it down, that’s an average of roughly 256 words/post and 1.3 posts/day (including weekends). As far as comments go, you guys (and me, to a lesser extent) have left an average of 9 comments per post, with an average of roughly 81 words per comment.
The current comment champion is “Dave Ramsey is Bad at Math, ” which was published just eight days after this site went live, on May 9th, 2005. As of this writing, that article has drawn 392 comments (and counting!).
And with that… All I can say is thanks for your support.
Good golly! Four years! Four kids! That’s a lot of work. Keep up the quality work. I still read your blog because of the high quality (and lack of typos).
Happy anniversary and congratulations.
Congrats, Nickel! 🙂
Happy birthday, Nickel!
BTW, with inflation, have you ever considered redubbing the site “Ten cent dime?” 😉
Actually, I guess it’s all relative!
All the best!
Len
Here’s another comment to add to your total. Congratulations on four great years. I hope that I can have a fraction of your success. I always look forward to your insights. Keep up the good work!
Congrats from your friends at socialnerdia (dot) com!!
Congrats Nickel! Not only have you made it to four years but you’ve been active and productive the whole time!
Congrats on 4 years, nickel, keep up the good work!
Congrats Nickel on making 4 years!
Congratulations on 4 years of blogging!
Congratulations on 4 years! I think that is like 8 years in blogging years. 🙂
Congrats – great to see the numbers. I haven’t thought about adding up comments like that, I should try it out. Love Stephanie’s comment above:) Thanks for the inspiration. Great source for your blog’s title, too. The way I chose mine was just based on an idea/philosophy I had in mind. Unfortunately, it turns out to just look like another cliche “Money” blog title, but that’s not the way I intended it! I was thinking of the Your Money and Your Life book and some of the thoughts I had in relation to it.
Congrats on no typos! Yeah!
By the way all these youngsters are calling you old. They haven’t got a clue what old is. Talk to me when your over 50 then come back again when your over 80. You really want to talk old , let’s talk to those approaching 90. Age is a matter of state of mind. 30 something is still a baby! Wish I could trade you places.
Keep up the great work and Happy Birthday to your blog!
loved the comment about Ramsey’s bad math. I personally believe there are three levels to his bad math, but the dude is actually great at math in that his pockets are lined and that is all he cares about.
Loved the five cent nickel quote as well. I thought it had something to do with the days of the five and dime store being a new thing. I wish you the best of luck on your blog, you don’t need luck you have value for folks to read and comment about so they will keep coming back.
Happy Birthday!
Keep up the good work. I enjoy reading your site.
Congratulations! Keep up the great work.
Congratulations FCN. 4 years is a huge accomplishment.
I still can’t get over the fact you can run the site while raising four kids. Makes your 4 year tenure even more impressive. Congrats!
Cheers to 4 years!
Wow that’s a lot of blogging.
To quote my favorite blogger: “The hard part, as you can guess, is the first 2,500 posts. After that, momentum really starts to build.”
The next 1000 should be even more exciting. 🙂
Happy Anniversary! How time flies!
The Dave Ramsey post is the MOST famous one.
Congrats.
Wow, made me think about it and realize that I’ve been writing for over four years now too.
It’s been a good run, here’s to another 4 years.
Nicely done sir! When we dumping a keg over you and throwing a party?!
Congratulations on 4 years! Here’s to another 4!
Well done! I just reached my 3 month mark. I do not have nearly the skill or pride that you do. Still, you are an inspiration.
Congratulation and thank you for your support over the years.
Congrats Nickel! Huge accomplishment! 😀
Congrats Nickle! Huge accomplishment! 😀
Ooo, ooo! Can I call Nickel old, too? Pretty please? 😀
Just kidding Nickel. Congrats! Four years is definitely a milestone to be proud of.
Congratulations! looking forward to at least four more fun and financial fact filled years.
Dang, you are old…
Dang, didn’t know you were that old, grandpa! Nah, just kidding. Congrats on the longevity, especially when so many of us (not me, yet) have gone to “Blogger’s Heaven” long ago. Keep it up!
