Flexible Spending Account Tapped out for 2005

Last fall I opted to set aside $3, 600 in my flexible spending account for 2005 — I knew that we’d be spending a good chunk of change on medical expenses this year, so I figured we might as well save a bit off our taxes. Well, four wisdom teeth and a shiny set of man-braces later, and we’ve already recouped the entire amount. Actually, if I wasn’t lazy about faxing in my claim for the last few hundred bucks, I would’ve cashed it out entirely a couple of months ago. Anyway, depending on where we end up tax-wise this year, this represents a total federal tax savings of at least $540. I say ‘at least’ because, as I’ve noted previously, I’ve decided to redistribute my retirement contributions such that I’ll be able to capture my full 403(b) match while at the same time funding a Roth IRA. But I still haven’t worked out what effect this will ultimately have on our tax bracket. We do very well in terms of exemptions and deductions (lots’o’kids, mortgage, retirement contributions, charitable donations, etc.) so my best guess is that we’ll still be able to keep ourselves in the 15% tax bracket when all is said and done. If not, our tax savings will be even greater.

With all the recent worry over identity theft and credit card fraud, I thought I’d post the contact info for the fraud departments at the three credit bureaus. And don’t forget to keep an eye on things using your free credit reports. Hopefully you have no need for such information but, if you do, at least you want have to dig it up yourself… (more…)

Wasting Time at Work

Quit reading this and get back to work! Based on a survey of 10, 000 workers, Salary.com claims that surfing the internet is the top at-work time-wasting activity, with 44.7% of respondents admitting to it. Frankly, I can’t believe the number is this low… Socializing with co-workers came in second at 23.4%, followed by conducting personal business, “spacing out, ” running errands, making personal phone calls, applying for other jobs, planning personal events, and arrive late or leaving early. All told, these workers admitted to wasting an average of a bit over two hours per day. So what are the most common excuses for wasting time? (more…)

New Threats to Your Credit Score

This website receives compensation for products or services you obtain through the links on this site.

According to a recent article on MSN/Money, an increasing number of municipalities are turning over unpaid library fines, parking tickets, traffic fines, etc. to collection agencies. Thus, these sorts of things are now starting to turn up on people’s credit reports, wreaking havoc with their FICO scores. The unfortunate thing is that such indiscretions may have more to do with absent-mindedness than with a lack of creditworthiness, but they count just the same. So be careful not to let such things slide by, or you might inadvertently wreck your credit.

What’s my credit score?

Update on the Blockbuster (Non)Deal for Switching

The other day I wrote about a deal from Blockbuster.com just for cancelling your NetFlix membership. As it turns out, we recently cancelled our NetFlix membership due to a busy summer travel schedule. So shortly after posting that entry, I dug out the cancellation notice and sent it to Blockbuster. Sure enough, I got a quick response with the promo code to unlock this deal. I then promptly got busy with others things and pushed it to the back of my mind. Well, I finally sat down tonight to take advantage of this offer and was surprised to find out what kind of ‘deal’ this really is… (more…)

Buying Furniture off the Back of a Truck

This past Sunday I heard a knock at the door and opened it to find a guy who gave me a quick pitch about how he was in town from North Carolina with a tractor trailer loaded with furniture that they were liquidating as part of the “summer markdown.” He went on to say that they were selling it for $0.30 on the dollar and invited me to see what they had in the truck.

It turns out that they were going up and down the street trying to get people to come out to see their wares. We don’t need any furniture, and there’s no way I’m going to buy it off the back of a truck from a guy who cold called at my front door but, curious guy that I am, I went out to see what was up.

When I got out to the street, I noticed that the door of the truck said something about Thomasville Distributing Co. (or something like that) out of High Point, NC. While I’m familiar with the Thomasville brand of furniture, I somehow doubt that these guys were official representatives of Thomasville Furniture Industries, Inc. It seems more likely that they slapped some letters on a truck that made them sound official and then went out looking for some scammable souls.

Anyway, when I got to the truck, it was chock full of apparently new furniture, ranging from a grandfather clock to living room and bedroom sets. They had some slick brochures and official looking price lists, but it was unclear exactly what brand the furniture was. And what about those low, low bargain prices? Most of the full sets were ‘marked down’ down from ~$10k to ~$3k, which got me wondering…

How often do these guys stumble upon someone that’s willing to shell out three grand for furniture off the back of a truck from a total stranger who happened to knock on their door on a Sunday afternoon? It must work at least occasionally, otherwise they wouldn’t be doing it. Beyond this, I’m really curious as to what the underlying scam is – again, I’m assuming here that people with legitimate truckloads of Thomasville furniture don’t make a living by pulling into subdivisions and trying to unload their wares in the middle of the street. I’ve Googled around a bit looking for an answer, but I haven’t run across anything related to this.

Was this really Thomasville furniture, or some sort of knockoff? Were the pieces factory seconds, or perhaps otherwise damaged? Or maybe they were stolen? Then again, maybe it’s perfectly normal for roving furniture salesman to go door-to-door trying to offload a truckload of home furnishings on a Sunday afternoon.

Regardless, I think that I can safely add these guys to my list of people to whom I wouldn’t write a check.

Update: Reader ‘hoops4ever’ provided a link to the Thomasville FAQ page, which contains the following information:

Someone in my area claims they are selling Thomasville furniture off of a truck. Are they legitimate?

No, we have heard of situations like this and would like to caution you about this furniture. While the truck may say that it is from Thomasville (the city in North Carolina), the furniture is not made by Thomasville Furniture Industries. Thomasville furniture is sold exclusively in retail stores – from Thomasville Home Furnishings stores to authorized galleries and dealers. Happy 4th of July (and Some Statistics)

Well, I’m back in town after just under 2500 miles of driving on my way to and from a much needed vacation. In honor of Independence Day, I thought I’d post some interesting 4th of July food, finance and trade statistics that I just ran across… For starters, Americans are 540% more likely to consume potato salad today than on a ‘typical’ day. What about other traditionally American foods? (more…)

Think Before You Write That Check

In the past, I’ve wondered about the risks inherent in check writing — after all, every check has your name, address, bank routing number and account number printed on it, and it comes complete with your signature. Sounds like a recipe for disaster if it were to fall into the wrong hands… After all, this is exactly the type of information (minus the signature) that got out when CardSystems was hacked. So what should you do to protect yourself? (more…)
